Animal Welfare Act (2006) & Animal Welfare

            

The Reptile Academy Ltd houses and exhibits our animals with the highest animal welfare standards. All of our animals are provided with:

 

The Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare

  • Freedom from hunger and thirst.

  • Freedom from discomfort.

  • Freedom from pain, injury and disease.

  • Freedom to express normal behaviours.

  • Freedom from fear and distress.

DEFRA - Licensing for Activities Involving Animals for Exhibition

            

The Reptile Academy Ltd is licensed by DEFRA under Southampton City Council Local Authority. 

 

This means that our standards of animal housing and welfare have been inspected and approved by an official government body.

Accreditation of Animal Welfare

            

As a leading reptile and amphibian educator, we will be introducing an accreditation scheme in 2020 to approve companies and organisations who house, breed or sell animals. Organisations will have to meet the high standards and ethos of The Reptile Academy Ltd, as we aim to improve animal welfare and husbandry amongst the herpetoculture community. 

Structured Courses    &Training Workshops            

We offer a mini course in Animal Welfare and Exhibiting Reptiles, designed to 

prepare you to care for, house and exhibit a variety of reptiles and amphibians in accordance with DEFRA and The Animal Welfare Act (2006), be aware of strong animal welfare standards and develop a strong understanding of higher level herpetology as a branch of Biological Sciences. This course will provide a thorough walkthrough of the new DEFRA guidelines, focusing from a reptile perspective.
