The Reptile Academy Ltd provides a range of educational reptile and amphibian services designed for universities, veterinary practices, mainstream and special educational needs and disabilities schools and much more. A passion for reptiles and amphibians and high animal welfare standards are at the centre of everything we do at The Reptile Academy.
University Seminars & Workshops
We deliver a range of formal seminars and workshops ideal for University academic groups and societies. Sessions include a seminar on a particular herptile topic followed by an encounter with one of our larger reptiles. Longer, bespoke full day sessions can be arranged catering for more participants. These are the perfect adjunct to any academic institution offering biology, zoology, ecology, animal management, veterinary medicine, veterinary nursing and other related life science degree programmes.
Mainstream School Lessons
Enrich your school curriculum in science or biology by having us deliver a hands-on exotic species lesson & handling workshop. Choose a topic for us to focus on from across Evolution, Animal Welfare, Conservation, Animal Biology and much more. Our sessions are tailored for KS1 through to KS5 and involve a combination of talks, hands-on animal handling and practicals using our other educational resources.
Veterinary Practice Workshops
Gain invaluable exposure to popular reptile and amphibian species, explore core husbandry requirements, practice handling and restraint and build your confidence to meet the needs of future herptile patients and a growing client base. These workshops are recommended as an optional add-on to our Introduction to Herpetology, Reptile & Amphibian Husbandry & Animal Welfare online asynchronous course.
Assisted Animal Activities (SEND & SEMH)
The Reptile Academy Education Team has experience working with adults and children living with ASDs, ADHD, Affective Disorders and other Learning, Social, Emotional and Mental Health Disabilities. Our AAA sessions have a hugely positive impact, engaging with participants in novel ways with new stimuli. Anecdotally, teaching staff at SEND/SEMH institutions report significant behavioural improvements and concentration by pupils in following lessons.
Red Letter Days & Buy A Gift Experiences
Subject to COVID-19 restrictions we provide personal 30 minute or 60 minute reptile and amphibian experiences, ideal for families. Meet our animals up close, handle and feed under the guidance of our expert Reptile Ranger Team. We anticipate these sessions may resume in Spring 2022.
We believe that reptiles and amphibians as pets deserve the highest quality husbandry that keepers can reasonably provide. If you are new to the reptile and amphibian keeping community, or are having problems, we provide a husbandry consultation service for particular species and can supply equipment and care guides. Over 90% of reptile and amphibian diseases in captivity have a husbandry cause and early intervention is often necessary. Please note we do not provide specific veterinary advice but can recommend several exotics veterinarians in the UK.
Public Outreach & Engagement Events
Historically we have attended many high profile public events to raise awareness of reptiles and amphibians, promote herptile biodiversity and inspire our next generation of herpetologists and conservationists. Previous events include BioBlitz Southampton, Exbury Gardens and Petersfield Festival among many more.
The Reptile Academy provides photography experiences ranging from a 2 hour workshop to a whole day course. Gain access to behind the scenes and photograph a superb array of rare reptiles and amphibians under the guidance of our dedicated instructors. Participants get to observe our reptiles and amphibians through a unique perspective and sessions are tailored for beginners to advanced photographers, exploring a range of photography techniques and learning how to work with exotic species safely.
