Our Story

The Reptile Academy Ltd was founded in 2018 but our story started long before. We began in 2014 by delivering small-scale educational and animal assisted activity workshops to schools and SEND/SEMH centres, helping children and adults living with ASDs, Affective Disorders, Behavioural Needs and other disabilities, recognising the significant positive impacts these animals can have on people's daily lives.

During the summer of 2016 and 2017, we ran two educational public engagement roadshows, aiming to educate members of the public about the importance of herptiles (reptiles and amphibians collectively) in global biodiversity as well as their complex care and welfare requirements as pets, the number of which has rapidly grown from 400,000 in 2008, 700,000 in 2017 to over 1.2 million animals in the UK today. In the process we raised money for several charities including Diamond DofE Challenge and Essex & Herts Air Ambulance.

Over the next year, we began to deliver more formal training workshops and sessions, to organisations such as Forestry England and The University of Southampton School of Biological Sciences, recognising a need for herptile education in areas surrounding ecology, zoology, biology and animal management, which is often a neglected area of teaching and study at university and workplace training.

In June 2018, The Reptile Academy Ltd was founded on this very passion for reptiles and amphibians, and the first formal training courses were developed, whilst still catering for our existing SEND/SEMH and public engagement clients. Over the next 3 years these courses were developed into a comprehensive online course, Introduction to Herpetology, Reptile and Amphibian Husbandry and Animal Welfare, designed as an adjunct to plug critical knowledge and experience gaps for anybody finding themselves working with reptiles and amphibians, including veterinary professionals, life scientists, animal management staff, zookeepers, field surveyors, students in these fields as well as passionate keepers with no background knowledge.

Whilst the covid-19 pandemic has temporarily suspended our hands-on animal activities, we are planning to get these started again in Spring 2022.
